Badrinath Dham Shrine Doors Opening in 2024

The spiritual paradise and a highly revered pilgrimage destination for Hindus, Badrinath, opens for merely six months which makes the pilgrims much eager to reach the temple in the open months.

When does Badrinath Temple open for Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand?

The official announcement of the opening of the Shri Badrinath Dham shrine for the Badrinath pilgrimage typically occurs on the occasion of Basant Panchmi. In the year 2024, Basant Panchmi falls on 14th Feb.

The opening date of Shri Badrinath Dham temple is announced on the auspicious day of Basant Panchmi every year. The date declaration is done from the royal court of Tehri Naresh in the Narendra Nagar of Tehri Garhwal District. This temple of Lord Vishnu has various rituals performed on the announcement day as well as the day of commencement of the temple's pilgrimage season. The announcement is followed by the Gadu Ghada ritual, the sacred sesame oil ceremony, which is specially extracted by devotees from the sesame seeds. The oil is then sent to the Badrinath temple via Rishikesh in a revered journey named "Tel Kalash yatra". On the day of the opening ceremony, the seat of lord Vishnu in the form of Badrinarayan is transferred from Narasimha Temple to Badrinath.

When does the Badrinath Temple shrine in Uttarakhand, Himalayas, close?

Closing dates for the temple are decided by the Char Dham committee on the eve of Vijay Dashmi/Dussehra. The closing of Badrinath temple is held on Bhai Dooj every year.

Both the opening & closing of Badrinath Temple has a ceremony with various rituals and events. The pilgrimage journey to Badrinath stays closed for almost half a year as the temple becomes inaccessible. For the closure months, the seat of Badrinath's deity, Shri Badrinarayan, is held at the Narasimha Temple in Joshimath.

The closing ceremony of Badrinath also attracts hundreds of devotees to witness the lord on the concluding day of the pilgrimage season. A jyoti (divine light) is lit in front of the idol before closing the kapaat (Doors) of the temple. The priest continues to worship the idol in the temple of Joshimath which is the winter seat temple of Lord Badrinarayan.
