Gangotri Temple

Two of the four Chardham destinations in Uttarakhand opened for the annual pilgrimage on the scheduled date of 26th April, 2020. The portals of Gangotri and Yamunotri Temples opened on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritya at 12:35 PM and 12:41 PM, respectively. At Gangotri Temple, prayers were offered in Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s name, who made an offering of Rs 1100 at the sacred shrine.

At 7:00 AM, the ‘Doli’ of Maa Gangotri left from the Bhairav Temple in Bhairav Ghati to reach Gangotri Dham at 8:30 AM. The idol was then taken inside the temple with all the rituals. The event was performed and witnessed by Chief Priest and few other important members of the committee.

On the other side, the ‘Doli’ of Maa Yamunotri left from its winter home at Kharsali at around 8:05 AM to reach Yamunotri Dham at 11:00 AM. The idol was then taken to the temple after the ‘Hawan’ and other mandatory rituals.

In the light of the lockdown due to the outbreak of CoronaVirus, devotees could not attend these ceremonies at Gangotri and Yamunotri. In order to follow the rule of social distancing, only 21 people were allowed to participate in these ceremonies which otherwise see a footfall of thousands of people. The Chardham Temples will now stay open for the next six months for the yatra.
