On the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya, the Char Dham Yatra in Garhwal Himalayas began on Tuesday i.e., 7th May 2019 with the portals of Gangotri and Yamunotri temples in Uttarkashi district being opened after ceremonial worship that was done all night in Bhairon Ghati.

The Door Opening of Gangotri Shrine


The doors of Gangotri Temple were opened at 11:30 A.M. along with the chanting of Vedic hymns and other rituals including Ganga Stotra, Ganga Lahari and Ganga Sahasranama. In addition to this, the devotees participated in the rituals and also bathed in the sacred river near the shrine. On this occasion, temple committee chairman Suresh Semwal, Uttarkashi district minister in charge Dhan Singh Rawat, local MLA Gopal Rawat, Garhwal commissioner BVRC Purushottam were also present at Gangotri.

While the doors of Gangotri opened at 11:30 A.M, those of Yamunotri were opened at 1:15 P.M. The devotees after worshipping at Gangotri reached Yamunotri Dham and similar ceremonies were performed in the presence of administrative and temple committee officials.

The Initial Scenario and Door Opening of Other Two Shrines

Before the door opening of Gangotri and Yamunotri took place, the idols of Goddess Ganga and Yamuna were brought from their winter abodes Mukhba and Kharsali, respectively early in the morning. It is pertinent, the re-opening of Gangotri and Yamunotri temples has marked the beginning of Char Dham Yatra, the doors of Kedarnath and Badrinath are scheduled to be opened on May 9 and May 10 respectively. This will mark the opening of all the Garhwal Himalayan shrines to the devotees.

Pilgrims on their Way to Badrinath


As the date of opening the portals of Badrinath is approaching, pilgrims from Delhi, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh have already started making their way to Badrinath Dham. Also, these pilgrims took the sacred bath at the Tapt Kund in Badrinath on Monday and bow down their heads at Singh Dwar. As the doors of Badrinath is still closed, pilgrims cannot go ahead of the Singh Dwar.
